How recently have you heard someone say: "You can prove anything from the Bible"? The minister of a church I attended in the 1950s said it often. An old-style Liberal, he was keen to discredit Fundamentalists. Even so, I had a great respect for him. He had a strong personal devotion to Christ and compassion for the oppressed. But I felt then, and I still feel, that his heart was closer to God than his head. I suspec­ted that the devotional faith in which he had been reared was compensating for his theological training.
